Thank you for visiting our new website. Kernow Hand Surgeons is a professional group based in Cornwall fully dedicated to treatment of diseases and injuries that affect the hand, wrist and peripheral nerves.

The group consists of two highly experienced Surgeons, two specialist therapists and two secretarial practice managers. We offer private as well as NHS funded consultations, surgery and hand therapy services. The care of private patients is based at the Duchy Hospital in Truro. NHS outpatient clinics are held at the Royal Cornwall hospital (Treliske) in Truro, Barncoose hospital in Redruth and West Cornwall Hospital in Penzance. NHS operations are performed at the Royal Cornwall hospital (Treliske) in Truro and St.Michaels hospital in Hayle.

This website is designed to provide useful information for patients and GPs including contact details, referral pathways as well as brief descriptions of some of the common conditions and their treatment.

We strongly believe that well-informed motivated patients are more likely to have successful outcomes after treatment. This is particularly true in Hand and Wrist surgery, were patients’ active participation and compliance with the recommended aftercare is vital for maximum benefits and swift return to work and other activities of daily living.

Our aim is therefore to present our patients and GP colleagues with an easily accessible on-line source of information as well as a portal for direct communication with your local experts in this field.

Bearing in mind that each patient is unique, we strongly advice to regard the information provided here as a guide and by no means a substitute for a personal consultation.

We welcome any feedback to improve the site and our services.

The team of Kernow Hand Surgeons

Tom Scott and Anmar Al-Shawi are two experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons based in Cornwall and responsible for leading the Hand Surgery service in this county. Both are fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons and members of the British Orthopaedic Association and the British Society for Surgery of the Hand. They work side by side as a team and their combined knowledge and skills cover the entire spectrum of disorders and injuries around the hand, wrist and peripheral nerves.

Kernow Hand Surgeons are extremely lucky to have two very experienced Hand Therapists whose expertise and hard work over the years have played a major role in a wealth of success stories for Cornish patients with hand problems. Carolyn Meikle has a background in occupational therapy and holds an MSc in her field. Gill Price is a very experienced physiotherapist who specialises in Hand Therapy. Both ladies are independent practitioners in their own right and have lead a dedicated local team of therapists for several years now. In this section you will find the necessary contact details and a list of treatment protocols for common conditions as a guide for patients and other therapists in the peripheries.

In this section you will find a description of some of the common hand conditions and the recommended treatment. We strongly advice to consider the information as a guide for better understanding and not a substitute for a personal consultation with a surgeon or therapist.

This section is dedicated to our GP colleagues in Cornwall. The aim here is to provide referral guidelines to our facilities as well as give recommendations for first line treatments that can be commenced in the community. We are also including a section on practical tips for local steroid injections around the hand. It is also intended to provide a portal for communication and a diary for events and meetings we will be planning in the near future. It is a work in progress and we appreciate your feedback!
